Long ago, before people had computers at home, machines were huge. They were so big that they filled entire rooms. Only scientists, governments, or big offices could use them. These early machines were powerful, but they were expensive and very difficult to operate.

In the 1970s, technology started to change. Engineers discovered ways to make electronic parts smaller and faster. Because of this, computers no longer needed to be the size of a house — they could fit on a desk.
This is where the idea of the desktop computer was born.
